Unlike the software, ProZ is only like $100 a year – if you're not willing to make that minimum investment, you're not serious about the profession. They aren't the only means to get jobs, but it wouldn't hurt to keep those avenues open, if not be beneficial.

So I guess I'd say check out the jobs out there, and if you think you can find enough Trados jobs then yeah, go ahead and buy it. I find it amazing how close I came to missing the opportunity.Īnd on top of that, I prefer online translation platforms for technical reasons (namely because I can work on Ubuntu, a lot of CAT tools seem to be Windows only). And what do you know, it coincided with the mainstay one. Even with my current Trados jobs I accidentally got into it only because another client begged me to do a job for them and got me the cracked version. It's because when new clients come I have no way of assessing how our work relationship would turn out to be. Before that it was almost never, and the few requests that would come I had to decline because I obviously cannot invest in something big for a small return. It was only a little over a year ago that I started getting regular Trados jobs. But for me, it was difficult to make a decision on it. Trados is considered the industry standard. I suspect it depends on the language and job offers you get. Some answers simply cannot be given without these factors in mind.
